Queries to Ruth Sutherland - ruth@sutherld.freeserve.co.uk
Thank you to everyone who turned out on what could not have been a wetter night! The winning times on the long course were impressive and at the same time it was good to have so many runners out at their first ever night event. The children who took part all did well. Rob Last's conscientious preparation and planning was appreciated and commented on by a number of runners, although he was not there to receive the compliments personally. He and Kevin Walters spent all afternoon putting out controls in the rain and Rob departed at 5.30pm to go to work in Hull. Thanks to both of you.
John Bouttell kindly staffed registration and the extended Sutherland Clan organised the start and finish under Jim's cheerful supervision. Thanks also to Brian Shaw who came with four-legged Jilly and took over at the finish to allow the helpers to run.
This was the first event I had organised and when I regaled details, to an amused audience of experienced organisers, about the generator hire shop which had closed when I arrived, and the puncture that appeared in my loaded car in Worksop en route to collect the equipment two hours before registration, I was assured that 'these things always happen'!! How do organisers tolerate the stress and why do they come back for more? Phil Haywood was, as always, a brick; he kept his cool throughout and despite looking like a drowned seafarer when he returned from checking all the controls he stayed until the event finished, marked up some extra maps for us and even went out at dawn this morning to collect in the bulk of the controls. Thank you Phil! Although I don't take responsibility for the weather I do apologise to those runners whose map bags were not up to the job. Next time I will seal all the maps into bags in advance.
I am aware that one control card was dropped and lost in the woods but I suspect another was lost and possibly not reported as there is one runner who retired who is not accounted for by name. If that runner is you, please let me know as soon as possible so I can add your name to the list. (Don't worry - we did check everyone back so we are fairly confident that no-one is still out there.)
The missing Silva headlamp appears to have been located; I won't tell tales on our friend Ian Marshall from AIRE.
A compass was handed in. Please contact me if it is yours.
