Initial planning and control site selection took place at the beginning of June and confirmed at Burbage by mid July, which meant some deterioration of the runnability of the extreme east and west bracken areas. This affected times on the longer courses, though I hoped competitors on these courses would be forgiving. Car parking, registration, and the need to establish acceptable white and yellow courses tend to set the basic layout of courses between the start and finish. The support of controller Guy Seaman, organisers Peter and Jill Gorvett and the technical wizardry of the McPherson's at the download tent assured me that everything would fall into place.
My apologies to the early Blue course competitors affected by the incorrect placing of control No 4 (79). I woke unusually early on Monday morning, disappointed, and wondering how it had happened. Fortunately my lasting memory on this sunny day will be of my view of orienteers from Burbage Rocks scurrying around below and then clawing their way up the crags towards the last control. It looked very hard work, and I felt I ought to apologise to each one as they came over the top. Then I thought, no! After all, if they'd cared to turn round before pressing on, the view was absolutely terrific!

We hope everybody found the self-service registration system satisfactory. It saved helpers and if we get the layout right next time, should minimise queuing. Thanks to Derek and Jen Gale from DVO who provided us with the instructions they used at Linacre.
Thanks to all the SYO helpers who gave their time so willingly. Our special thanks go to Stuart Ollerenshaw, the farmer on Burbage who couldn't have been more helpful. He cut the fence over the hurdle-gate we used to get straight out onto the moor after Parson House asked us not to take everyone past their windows. We had expected to be forced to take everyone back out towards the road and all the way round. Stuart is giving the parking collection to charity - MacMillan Cancer Relief.
