The String Course took place in the woods to the north-east of the finish. Wellies were advised, though not compulsory. The approach was a little hair-raising for the earliest competitors who had to negotiate two lanes of on-coming traffic as vehicles approached the parking field; Ruth Charles did sterling work directing traffic; drivers were careful and parents were very understanding.
Thank you to the children and adults who contributed to the unusually large number of compliments received about the course, which wove between trees, in and out of deep leafy gullies with just enough headroom for under sevens, and finally down a footpath-cum-stream. Larger participants were forced to make route choices about following the string - to be or not to be decapitated?
The prizes of satsumas or raisins were festive, although our own member Philip Weigand, the first competitor, ran in to the finish and asked for his lollypop!
Thanks go to Kirsty and Lucy Hanley for checking out the course early on in their all-terrain double buggy and then staying for nearly two hours to give out celebrity cuddles while their parents worked tirelessly on the start and finish. (They appear to be getting used to hard work)
Thank you to David McShane and Fiona Sutherland for their time 'clipping' brambles to make the course safe, and to all the children who helped with damming the gully to assist little ones to cross it with dry feet. Well done all of you!
