Woman's Tale, AComment

Sheila Florance

Australia, Film, 1991

The only Paul Cox film I've ever enjoyed, although enjoyed is hardly the word for a film where the lead actress is literally dying before your eyes. Sheila Florance gives a great performance as Martha, an old lady who is dying of cancer, although eyes are on her as Sheila Florance as well - part of the story of the film, which was written especially for her, is taken from her own life. Alex Menglet appears as a conman downstairs, and Norman Kaye as her next door neighbour with Monica Maughan as his daughter. Everyone else, however, is incidental to Florance herself.

Prisoner Actor/Actress Spottings
Sheila Florance ..... Martha
Victoria Eagger ..... Nurse 1
Marina Finlay ..... Prostitute
Marion Heathfield ..... Nurse 2
Norman Kaye ..... Billy
Dawn Klingberg ..... Don's Wife
Monica Maughan ..... Billy's Daughter
Alex Menglet ..... Con 2
Myrtle Woods ..... Miss Inchley
